Ep 9: Jim King – Senior Asylum Officer | US Citizenship and Immigration Services
Kris tackles fascinating real life government service work with Jim King who works for the United States Government interviewing asylum seekers! For almost 20 years Jim has been in front of hundreds of people, hearing their cases and making key determinations about their eligibility for asylum protection in the United States.
Jim is a lawyer by training, but as you’ll hear in this interview, being a lawyer is not a requirement for the job. There are other avenues from public policy, refugee corps, to NGO’s that might make you qualified for this work. The most surprising will be to find out why being able to put on your poker face might be a very relevant part of the job of an Asylum Officer. And one more surprise…how a mediocre student in high school can find motivation in a college atmosphere that leads to achieving high levels of academic and professional accomplishment.
